All-Women Alaska Motorcycle Tour Now Taking Reservations

Start planning for summer 2014

Update April 8, 2014:Schuberth is excited to partner with MotoQuest Tours amp; Rentals on the Alaska Women’s Motorcycle Ride, and will be providing a C3W flip-up helmet for each participant included in her registration. Sarah Schilke, Schuberth’s Marketing and PR Manager, has been slated to lead this epic adventure. Some might know Sarah from her work with the Women amp; Motorcycling conferences, and along with her advocacy work she brings decades of experience leading group rides.

This is truly one of those trips of a lifetime—riding a motorcycle through Alaska! And with this special tour sponsored by MotoQuest in conjunction with Schuberth Helmets, women riders can do it in the company of other women. MotoQuest Tours is now taking reservations for its 2014 Alaska All Ladies Motorcycle Ride, running June 29 through July 6, 2014. This will be the fourth time the company has organized an all-women tour.

The eight-day, seven-night 1,200 mile tour starts in Anchorage and heads north to Denali National Park and Fairbanks before heading south and making a loop through Valdez and ending back in Anchorage. Average mileage each day is about 250 miles.

The route takes riders through some of the most beautiful spots in Alaska on all paved roads.

While many of Alaska’s roads are upaved, this itinerary takes riders on paved roads only. Included in the price of $4,800 is the rental of a dual-sport Kawasaki KLR 650. The price drops to $3,500 for riders who choose to bring their own motorcycle.

Cathy Herron went on the 2007 MotoQuest Alaska tour and loved the KLR 650 she chose to ride. Behind her are the Tangle River Inns fishing pond and the foothills of the Alaska range.

MotoQuest is running this tour in partnership with Schuberth Helmets. Sarah Schilke, marketing director for Schuberth and a seasoned on- and off-road rider, will be one of the two guides on the tour. The second is Ariel Krawczyk, a rider with years of experience leading tours.

Ariel Krawczyk has been guiding tours, most recently motorcycle tours, all over the world for most of her professional career.
MotoQuest is no stranger to organizing women’s motorcycle tours, having held its first one in 2007. WRN sent a correspondent, Perri Capell, on that ride, who shared with WRN readers what it was like to ride with all women.
“One of the advantages of an all-women tour is that it is more appealing for solo female riders or those who have no one to tour with,” said WRN Editor Genevieve Schmitt, who has been writing about the growth of women’s motorcycling touring for more than 15 years. “An all-women tour creates a more welcoming environment for solo women, and inevitably on these tours lifelong friendships are formed.”
A rep from MotoQuest tells us they will assist in matching up solo riders who want to share a room, which should bring down the cost considerably.

An overnight stay at Chena Hot Springs is aptly timed in the middle of the ride to invigorate riders for the remainder of the tour. Here some of the ladies from the 2007 MotoQuest women’s tour relax in the natural springs.

  1. Dang. “Road only.” ADV ride would be a winner for me.

  2. I want to go. When is the deadline to register?

    1. You will need to click the link in the story to go to the organizer’s website. All the registration details are there.

  3. I am very interested in this! I have been wanting to go for a couple of years. The biggest problem from what I understand is the gas stations. I have an FXDX Dyna Glide and would really like to ride him (Bob). But I hit reserve at about 120 miles and usually stop and fuel at that time. How do we take care of the refueling process? Like I said, “I wanna go!”

    1. Please contact MotoQuest with your questions. Phone number is: 800.756.1990 or 907.272.2777.

  4. I know it says all ladies… would they allow my hubby to come too? We would be riding up from California to the starting point and no way is he going to let me ride from here to there alone.

    1. The All Ladies Tour is catered to an all women experience. MotoQuest asks that males or couples looking into this itinerary, look into their Best Of Alaska Adventure.

  5. Was trying to figure out how to save up enough for this trip and figured maybe I can manage the 2015 one. Then I checked the specs on the bike — 35 inch seat height? I have a 29 inch inseam, a bad hip and knees that are not so good anymore. I wouldn’t even be able to get my leg over that.

    1. MotoQuest has informed us that lowered KLRs are available. Before you decide not to go, please call them and ask how low the lowered KLRs are? The bike is very light too so you don’t necessarily have to flat foot it to have control over it.

  6. Would love to go. However, going to be overseas the summer of 2014. I am looking into a trip up the Alcan, around AK and back by ferry in 2015. I grew up in Anchorage and don’t get up there much. If this trip happens it will be my birthday blow — turning 70 that June.Bought my first BMW this spring, the F 800 GT, and I’m loving it. After years of cruisers this was a bit of a learning curve but loving it more all the time. Light, responsive, ABS brakes and traction control and I can still load all my stuff on it. You all have fun.

  7. A KLR650 is pretty tall for me (I’m 5 feet 4 inches). Are they lowered for this all-women ride?

    1. Yes, MotoQuest has informed us that lowered KLRs are available, but be sure to ask when registering.

  8. I am kinda short and I know the KLR is quite high. My husband owned one and I couldn’t get my feet to touch the ground. Have any of them been lowered?

    1. MotoQuest has informed us that lowered KLRs are available, but be sure to ask when registering.

  9. Dang! That will be right in the middle of my semester! How about another one in 2015!

    1. There is another one in 2015, as noted at the end of the article. Click on the link there and you will be directed to details, including dates for the 2015 tour.

  10. Now that the kids are gone, I will tell my husband it’s my turn to get sent to “summer camp!”Looks like a great trip. Thanks for organizing it. If not this year, then maybe one soon.

  11. Ladies! Please come join us. This tour should definitely be on your “bucket-list.”
