Biker Belles participants will take to the road during the Sturgis Rally on their sixth annual ride, Tuesday August. 5, 2014. The signature Buffalo Chip event was created to raise funds for South Dakota charities, and it does so by bringing together women, their families and friends to celebrate the role women play in shaping the culture, sport, art and history of motorcycling.

For me, the Steel Horse Sisterhood Summit was also a sort of coming-of-age as a female motorcycle rider, having never attended such an event before. Being accepted with open arms by hundreds of seasoned motorcyclists made it feel as if I had reached a milestone in my year and a half experience of riding. No competition, no cattiness, no judgment; just kinship on an unspoken level.

This year’s ride brought riders back to the Daytona International Speedway as the starting point, where the ride originated in year’s past.
