Helmet Itch

I've seen posts on other forums about it but thought I would post here since you-all are girls and give good advise.

I get helmet itch real bad sometimes and especially if I have had my hair cut a few days before the ride (which I quit doing). I have to say that it could be downright dangerous to be distracted so by a pesky itch that will not go away. Kinda makes a girl want to quit going for those nice long bike rides.

I've had my hair long and short and still the same result. I've tried different shampoos, no conditioner, different conditioner, medicated shampoo and still have the problem. I've tried different helmets with no luck also. I have recently tried a do-rag (which I'm not fond of but whatever) but the ride wasn't long enough to know forsure. The only thing that I have not done is clean the liner b/c I'm afraid it will make the problem worse. Any ideas of what I could try or anyone have the same problem? This problem is really making me PO'd.

Hey Teresa...I'm not fond of the do-rags either and mine comes off when the helmet does. I've worn one for over 20 years and I think it does help with the itch. It keeps your hair from getting in the foam lining in the helmet. You may need to try different kinds since there are several types of material out there these days. My hair is short and I've worn it this way for lots of years...it's not a Pixie like a little girls but a little shorter and it's straight and I just brush it in place and good to go. Some of the other ladies say it always looks good but they always see it the same way even if I'm not on the m/c because I don't do the curling iron/curler/perm thing 'cause it's baby fine and flat! Hope this helps!

I have a friend who wears a bandana to keep the sweat from running down her face. She folds it so there's an extra fold on her forehead. I haven't had that particular problem. I think Bren mentioned the same on one of the topics about buying a new helmet.

Thanks Debra for the reply. I have seen people mention "Silks" and I wonder where a person can find them?

Well unfortunely Silks are no longer made. I've looked for them but haven't found anything similar. I finally found that out from one of the boards that came up when I was searching. If you put in "do rags" in your browser you'll come up with all sorts places but lots of m/c shops also carry them too.

Any idea of what the "Silks" were made of? From the name I'm guessing silk...

Hey...the inside layer was silk and the outside layer is cotton....2 layers. You have to get really creative when looking up "do-rags" 'cause some are listed by their names and not as do-rags.
There's bandana, zandana's, skull caps, helmet liners, do rags, flydana, Scampa something, pilot helmet liners, and who knows what else. They aren't easy to find when you want something specific. You just have to look and look and then look some more.
You may end up trying several different ones before you find a style that you like.

Ooooooooook....maybe I've been misinformed about being out of business. Looks like it's spelled SLIK rather than SILK. Mine are so old they've lost the printed name that was on the side when I bought them years ago. I usually keep about 3 so that I have one to wear when another one is in the wash.

I found them at CALMoto, Silver Eagle has a similar product that's microfiber,and others. Glad I was checking them out again and found out that I had the wrong spelling. Now I can order a couple of new ones...yipppeeee. I put Slik helmet liners in the search box.

tlc...couldn't send you PM...said was disabled. Looked at the ones at the link but some look bulky but since I found them by going to another forum I'll probably be ordering a couple in the next couple of days. Thought it was funny when one of the guys said he likes them because his ears don't get ripped off when he puts his helmet on/off and he'd gotten use to the little Amish girl look. I had to smile 'cause I hadn't thought about the little Amish girl look...but I imagine we all look strange to somebody so we just smile and move on!

LOL, one little letter missplaced and everything goes haywire! I have seen it spelled Silk though so I don't think you need to ride the short bus yet

I too thought the ones in the link were bulky with them tied up in back like they are. Let me know how the ones you are getting work out as I would be interested to know.

I guess you can't send PM's cause you have been bad EDIT: I just checked my Control Panel and it was me that was the problem. I guess I didn't check yes to receive PM's. I think I need to ride the short bus now LOL
