Riding with SO

Postby Kitkat74 » Thu Nov 10, 2016 4:43 pm

Being a newbie, I don't want to ride without my husband. Too much can go wrong at this early stage...as I gain more seat time I know there will come a day when I'll be ok to occasionally ride without him. For now though, I am perfectly content to take the lead and have him behind me, watching my back. It's comforting to me to be able to look in the mirror and see him back there. He wants me to start following him but I just don't like the idea. Do you ladies lead or take up the rear when riding with your SO?

Hey KitKat,

I've been riding a little over a year. At first, my husband always rode behind me as a "buffer". Now we trade off, depending on who is choosing our route. When we ride together in a group of my friends he almost always sweeps ... but on the flip side of that when he rides with "his" friends he usually leads or is 2nd.

As far as riding alone, I do about 90% of my riding solo. It makes you VERY aware of everything around you, to say the least!

Your progress is fantastic!!! :D

I usually ride in front. I don't like to follow. :-)

My husband prefers to follow. He says if he leads he spends too much time looking back to be sure I am ok. I also like to be in front so I can choose which roads to take. :D

When I ride with my friend, he follows. He's also an instructor, so he can see if I am doing something wrong, or if I am doing something correct. Also he is a buffer, & if there is any problems he is behind me & can stop.

When I was a newbie, most of my practicing was by myself, Hubby escorted me about 30% of the time. I progressed to short trips on my own, usually just a few hours. Day trips were done together or with a small group of friends. The next few years about 50% of my riding was solo but the last couple, almost exclusively with Hubby and friends. It's not as much fun by myself anymore, I may get back to it in the future, you never know.
I usually follow and am fine with that. He likes to lead, it's his personality and I get to enjoy the scenery a bit more. He cocks the right hand mirror to keep an eye on me. When we're in a large group, we'll enter the line together but always get separated as the riders filter in and staggers shift, I'm comfortable with it and he has stopped trying to keep me in sight.
